What Does a Doula Do?

A doula is a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to pregnant people before, during, and after events in the reproductive health continuum.

As a birth doula. I play a variety of roles as dictated by the family I'm serving. This includes but is not limited to:
  • Recognizing birth as a key experience that you will remember all your life
  • Understanding the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a person in labor
  • Assisting you in preparing for and carrying out your plans for birth
  • Staying with you throughout the labor
  • Providing emotional support, physical comfort measures and an objective viewpoint, as well as helping you get the information you need to make informed decisions
  • Facilitating communication between you, your partner(s), and your clinical care providers
  • Perceiving my role as nurturing and protecting of the birth experience
  • Allowing other support persons to participate at their comfort level

Why Hire a Doula?

The process of childbirth is a life-changing experience that can deeply impact the way a person feels about themselves, their bodies, and their families. When one feels supported and cared for, they are more able to confidently navigate the natural (yet demanding) process of labor and childbirth.

Numerous clinical studies have found that a doula’s presence at birth:

  • tends to result in shorter labors with fewer complications
  • reduces negative feelings about one’s childbirth experience
  • reduces the need for Pitocin (a labor-inducing drug), forceps or vacuum extraction and cesareans
  • reduces requests for pain medication and/or epidurals

Limits to Service

Birth doulas accompany families in labor to help ensure safe and satisfying birth experiences.  Birth doulas do not:

  • Perform any clinical tasks, such as blood pressure checks, vaginal exams, fetal heart tone checks, etc.
  • Make decisions for you or your family.  The doula helps you get the information necessary to make an informed decision and reminds you if there is a departure from your birth plan.  The doula is not there to impose her wishes for the "perfect birth" upon the family she serves.
  • Replace your partner.  The doula provides a more objective outlook on the process while allowing your partner to remain informed and as active as he/she wishes to be.  The doula understands that your partner provides a kind of emotional support that no one else can provide, and is there to work along side him/her during labor.
  • Speak to the staff on your behalf.  The doula will discuss your concerns with you and suggest options, but you or your partner should always speak directly to the clinical staff.
